What Is a WYSIWYG Clownfish Pair? Why Seeing the Exact Pair Matters
If you've browsed bonded clownfish pairs online, you've probably seen the letters WYSIWYG. They stand for "what you see is what you get," and for a live-fish purchase that's one of the most useful promises a breeder can make. Here's what it means at Blue Eyed Clowns, why it matters even more for a pair, and how to use the photos and video to choose with confidence.
What WYSIWYG means at Blue Eyed Clowns
When we list a bonded pair as WYSIWYG, the two fish in that listing's photo or video are the two fish that ship to you. It isn't a similar pair or a stock photo of the morph. It's the actual pair, and each listing names that pair. Our current bonded pair listings are roughly 1.5 to 2 inches.
For a single fish, a typical photo of the morph usually tells you what you need to know, because you're mainly choosing a color and pattern. With a pair, you're choosing two individual fish and how they get along. Seeing the real pair gives you much more to go on.
Why it matters more for a pair
You see both patterns. Designer clownfish vary from fish to fish, even within the same morph. One Frostbite or Snowflake can look quite different from the next. With a WYSIWYG pair, you know exactly how both fish look before you commit.
You see the size difference. In an established clownfish pair, the larger fish is usually the female and the smaller one the male. A small size gap is normal and is part of what a settled pair looks like.
You see how they act together. A video shows more than a photo can. Bonded fish tend to stay near each other, share a favorite spot, and settle into a calm routine, with the smaller fish often deferring to the larger one.
A quick, honest note: "bonded" means the two fish have paired up and get along. It isn't a promise that they'll spawn in your tank. Some pairs do, and some never do, and either way they make a great centerpiece.
What to look for in the photos and video
When you watch a pair listing, look for these signs:
- Both fish swim upright and confidently, without hanging at the surface or hiding the whole time.
- Eyes look clear and fins look intact.
- The two fish stay close or keep coming back to each other.
- Both fish seem alert and interested in what's going on around them, especially near feeding time.
- You love the color and pattern on both fish, not just one.
Photos and short clips can't show everything. If you want a closer look or have a question about a specific pair, contact us before you order. We would much rather answer questions up front than have you guess.
Meet the parents
Every captive-bred clownfish starts with a pair. Our breeding pairs live in dedicated mated-pair systems at our hatchery in the Florida Panhandle, and they're fed on a steady schedule through the day. They get small portions of a quality pellet in the morning and evening, flake food at midday, and a little pureed beef heart in the afternoon. That routine, along with daily health checks and stable water, is what our fry and grow-out fish come from.
Behind those systems are our founders. Chris Wright is a marine biologist focused on fish health, genetics, and broodstock selection. Mike Kay is an aquaculture systems engineer who handles our breeding systems, water quality, and day-to-day husbandry. Some of our breeding pairs have names our followers already know, like Morticia & Gomez and Sony & Cher. This fall, our "Meet the Parents" series on social media is introducing them and following their eggs, hatches, and fry.
Getting your tank ready for a pair
A pair needs a little more room and stability than a single fish, so planning ahead pays off. In general:
- Start with an established, stable reef tank. Our pre-buy checklist walks through the basics.
- Add the pair together, since they're already settled with each other.
- Keep the first day calm with low light and a gentle routine. Our acclimation guide covers it step by step.
- Watch over the first week how they eat and where they choose to settle.
If you're not sure whether your tank is a good fit for a pair, ask us. That's what we're here for.
